K-Hill - "Da Instigator" - Reviews store home forum FAQ

- RATING: 5 / 5
Oh my God. First of all, apologies to the cats at Neblina, and to K Hill for
sleeping on this for so long. Ladies and gents, this is one of the best songs
of the year right here. From K Hill's superb outing on the mic, to Nick The
1nda's Primo-esque beat, to the equally strong B-side cuts from Chapter 13
and Medinah General, everything about this screams quality. K Hill's comes
off as a hyperactive Common Sense (not the hippy Common that my man became)
with skills to the 10th power. Example - "I'm the definition of nice
- you're the definition of Cool C and Steady B pulling a heist." This
man is NOT playing. Check the website link above to hear the streaming audio,

As the newly established Neblina Records now are dropping the first single
off their upcoming "Definition" compilation, emcee K-Hill is chosen
to hold down the title track "Da Insigator" as produced by Nick
Da 1nda. The beat as it appears here works well, ambitiously put together
with rough drums and appropriate cuts. And K-Hill, which is a new acquaintance
to most of us, comes through well with his rhyme scheme despite the nonsense
chorus. Instead, we'll find our favorite stuff on the flip. Young Valentine
drops a nice, varied beat for Chapter 13 and "The Rebirth" takes
us on an enthusiastic and pretty exciting ride thanks to the tight emceeing.
The finishing track here, Medinah General's "Dreams" is a sweet
layed back piece, spiced by DJ Residents well-timed cuttin' all over. Internet
based Neblina accomplishes good things with this record, proving the fact
that the music speaks for itself - and can be put out through other ways than
corporate channels. Although the B-side acutally outshines the intended title
smash hit, this wax is well worth picking up while awaiting the forthcoming
compilation.

This blazing first 12" taken from Neblina Records' forthcoming 'Definition'
compilation features a hand-picked selection of talented underground mic manipulators
and beatcrafters on the come-up.
Lead
cut Da Instigator sees Wilson NC all-rounder Kevin "K" Hill raise
the bar with his brazen flow, "sh*t starting" battle-ready arsenal
and true school mindset. Backed by a funkdafied hook and raucous beats c/o
Nick the 1nda, K-Hill proceeds to unleash his onslaught on fake gangsta rappers
and backpackers alike, throwing down the gauntlet to all emcees that think
they've got what it takes to step up with lines like: "I'm the definition
of nice, you're the definition of Cool C and Steady B pulling a heist."
On a more introspective tip, Chicago based lyrical and production duo Chapter
13 reflect on their bittersweet infatuation with hip-hop on the impeccably
crafted Young Valentine produced anthem The Rebirth, which centres around
a haunting melody that'll linger in your mind long after the track ends. Final
joint, Dreams, thumps hard with its shadowy vibes, heavy head-nodding beats
and deft cuts c/o Raleigh native DJ Resident, as Medinah General vividly recounts
a dream state robbery scene by scene.
All
in all, a tasty introductory offering from the Neblina camp that puts the
spotlight on a handful of commendable underground cats who've got all the
angles covered: compelling rhymes, crafty production and creative turntable
antics. For more info and to get your hands on a copy, head for: www.neblinarecords.com

"...The
feel-good Chapter 13 track, "The Rebirth," and Medinah General's
"Dreams" also offer stand-out performances from the underground.
"The Rebirth" provides a soothing, soulful voiceover in the background
that allows the beat to melt into the lyrics. "Dreams" explains
the "nighttime vision" of a robbery scenario that is overshadowed
by a DJ Resident scratched-up chorus that will be music to the ears of hip-hop
old-timers..."
